I’ve been going through all of my writing and decided to post some that might be getting a bit too dusty. I wanted this to finally see the light of day since it meant a lot to me at the time I was working on it. Below is a personal project/exercise I did back in 2018 (and again a few years later) where I would listen to songs and write out what images would come to my mind while listening.
The rules:
- No pausing the song
- No starting the song over
- If the song ends midsentence I have to stop writing and move on
- Little to no personal pronouns
Dizzy – In Time
Driving down an isolated highway, sunlight peeking through the trees. Singing along to the music playing through the stereo. Hand hanging out of the window, moving to the beat in the wind. Pulling into a gas station lot with a restaurant that looks abandoned. Sit for a moment to catch your breath.
Haiva ru – Apple Trees
Walks in the sunset, looking up to the sky as it gets dark. Thinking back to someone who isn’t in their life anymore. Headphones in their ears, faintly playing music. Almost to their destination and they slowly start jogging. Stop to take a breath, glance around. A few steps and..it’s here.
Yoste – Arc
Waking up at dusk. Stretching. Deep breaths. The swishing of pajama pants that are a size too big. Pull back the curtains so the light will come through. The beginning of a new day with nothing. Hard cold floors meet calloused feet. Muscles stretching and warming up. Stress flowing away with every movement. Soft brushing of fur between ankles. Gentle companionship. Slow breaths turn to fast heartbeat.
alayna – Sweet Soul
Eyes fluttering open to see a blurry shape. Hands reaching. Skin meeting rumpled fabric. Focused eyes. Pull of eyebrows in confusion, then disappointment. Flashbacks to a fight. Yelling, screaming. Crying. “I need you.” Broken words, broken trust.
Atlas Bound – Landed on Mars
Piano keys clanging. Sunlight shining on the polished wood. Dancing to the beat alone. Swaying hips. Arms waving, coming together then separating. Shuffling feet. Bliss in the moment. Tired eyes meeting then closing in sync. Skin brushing. Slow smiles melding.
Fly By Midnight – You Belong
Groups of friends out for the night. Eyes meeting over shoulders. Lights flaring. Sun setting. Infectious laughter. Arms linked, walking in step with each other. Cloud of happiness.
Phora – To the Moon
Lighting candles along bathtub rim. Turning overhead lights off. Moonlight coming through the window. Low vibe beat flowing through the air. Scents mingling. Robe falling to the floor. Hair flowing, fingers running through it. A tentative toe dip into the water. Satisfied smile. Splashing water. Reclining, content, in warm water. Surrounded by bubbles and magic. Stones glowing in the windowsill. Soft meow from behind. Familiar curling along the stones.
EXES – Quiet
Humming at the stove top. Sizzling vegetables. Savory aroma. Twinkling lights along the wall. Click of a door closing. Quick meeting of eyes. Lips brushing a cheek. Murmured greetings.
Henry Green – Another Light
Shuffling boxes. Tearing cardboard. Thumps on the ground. Cloudy daylight.
Glancing out the front window. Fog creeping through the trees. Towering trees and other unknown shapes. Unsteady heartbeat. Hands that can’t stay still.
Rosie Carney – Winter
Chilly breeze chipping away at your warmth. Solitude. Brisk walks down a busy sidewalk. Brief eye contact with strangers. Shoulders bumped. Mouths twisting in annoyance.
Wild Child – Sinking Ship
Black. Falling through nothing, into nothing. Head falling back in surrender. Soft gentle landing. Wrapping oneself in warmth. Caresses brushing a face.
Lisa Hannigan – Snow
Golden mornings. Trees glowing in sunlight. Stovetop clicking. The whoosh of a burner. Coffee bubbling into a favorite mug. Tired, content sigh. Hands overlapping to hold the warmth of daily caffeine. Staring straight ahead.
Charlie Cunningham – Blindfold
Looking up as the rain falls down. Droplets splashing onto a face. Eyelashes fluttering. “What a weirdo.” Judgement, avoidance..envy. Breath released with a smile. Looking forward.
Alexi Murdoch – All My Days
Windows rolled down. Hand tapping out a rhythm on the door. Humming along to the radio. Glances to the side, smiles exchanged. Laughter filling the cab. Excitement in the eyes and a buzzing in the air. Sun setting slowly. Endless stretch of a back road. Ba-dump ba-dump. Curses at the worn path ahead. The brush of a tail. Dog breath and egg farts.
Delta Heavy – Kaleidoscope
Flashing lights. Seductive figure on a stage. Entranced eyes. Dancing alone. Intense desire building. Moving together through the stars. Combining souls. Magic in the air.
Ava Max – My Way
Singing off-key into a wooden spoon. Dancing in a kitchen. Pet joining in and moving through the house. Shuffling feet and amused laughter.
Erthlings – Cuts & Bruises
Dark club. Pounding bass. Moving through the crowd. Red and purple flashing lights. Hips move to the beat. Closed eyes. Getting lost in the music. Bodies brush together. Teasing. Flirtatious smiles. Sinister smirks. Running through hallways. Amused chuckling echoing. Terror.
L Devine – Daughter
Ecstatic smiles. Laughter. Sunny picnics. Rainbow pride. Jean jackets. Arguments. Tears of frustration. Crumbling hope. Broken hearts. Apologies. Shaky trust.
The Swoons, Transviolet – Lost Frequency
Halo of light. Wandering an empty hallway. Curled up on a couch. Unfocused gaze. Disconnected.
Hidden citizens, Ruelle – Take Over
Confident posture. Daring gaze. Fast driving through traffic with ease. Going forward no matter the obstacle. High heels. Stomping out the competition.
Louis the Child, RAYE – Breaking News
Hands brushing away words. Walking away without looking back. Regret for letting go.
Thank you for reading and reminiscing with me. This practice helped me get in the habit of writing regularly and be descriptive in a way I hadn’t before. I don’t know if I will do this practice again but if you decide to, I would love to read it. Have a lovely day and if you’d like to support me further leave a comment, like, subscribe, or head to my BMAC!
